inserting photos

Hello Listers

I am new to Abiword, until now using Open Office 1.1.4 then 2 on my
mandriva LE set up. I have attempted to insert photos into a document,
just to see how it would go. The first time the photo inserted okay,
but since then the programme stalls and I have to kill it. It gets
stuck at the selecting from file stage. Anyone any ideas about fixing
this? Thanks
